I’m getting ahead of myself, but I had so much fun last night that I just felt like sharing.
I’m in Canada!! I was a little nervous crossing the border, but no problem, and guess what?! They have Harvest Host locations here!
I stayed at Field Stone Fruit Wines. No electricity, but a great place to camp! I picked 8 pounds of raspberries (got to keep 2 lbs – but I traded one for a pound of strawberries instead). Picking berries was kind of peaceful and DELICIOUS! Best berries I have ever tasted! Then that evening, I was invited to a VIP ‘Library’ tasting. What a kick!
The owners, Laura and Phillip, were a lot of fun, and the group they invited was a bunch of jokers. We laughed for hours. Not in a million years did I think that I would like ‘Fruit’ wine – I thought it would be super sweet, but Nope! It is delicious and refreshing ….. and I hear it is much less likely to cause a hangover if you accidentally drink too much. I also tasted garlic and onion jam – seems icky, right? No again.
Anyway, I just wanted to give Laura and Phillip a plug. If you are ever around Calgary, please stop in. You won’t be disappointed. They also have a lot of fun special events planned, so join right in!

To top it all off, my neighboring Harvest Host guests, Jim and Jen, brought me coffee before I left this morning! So kind. Oh, and if you are wondering what a ‘Library Tasting’ is, it has something to do with tasting the same variety of wine at different ages – new, old and older – to see how well the wine ages. Fruit wine is meant to be consumed within the year of bottling, but it seems to taste pretty good up to 5 years later. After that, you may want to consider turning it into vinegar!
I’ll be back soon!
Tip of the day: Don’t take chances crossing the border. Even at a small crossing, they are very thorough, ask a bunch of questions, and they have a right to tear through and search everything. Leave your contraband at home!
